Artist Statment

Ross forms brightly coloured flowers and lichen in porcelain that reflect natural decay and the life cycles we share with the natural world.

His work is strongly influenced by the Scottish landscape, drawing inspiration from the wild beauty of the Highlands, the deep forests, and the carefully maintained botanical gardens in cities such as Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow. This contrast between untouched nature and cultivated greenery reflects the tension between the natural world and human-made environments – a central idea in his practice.

Ross also explores themes of escapism and observation, taking influence from macro photography, which allows him to focus on the fine details of plant life. He uses printmaking alongside his ceramic work to capture these delicate patterns and textures. These prints also help transform ordinary bathroom objects, making them appear aged, decayed, and overtaken by living organisms.
